Gazipur-Airport BRT line to open by December 2022

Officials from Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Limited said that the elevated Bus Rapid Transit Line 3 project connecting Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with Gazipur would open for vehicles to move in December 2022.

They also stated that the civil works for the corridor for buses would be complete by September 2022 at a press conference held at the company's headquarters in the capital.

Safiqul Islam, company managing director, stated that the road linking Tongi College and Abdullahpur under elevated BRT lines would be rebuilt before December.

He stated that the corridor was difficult to construct due to unremitting vehicular traffic.

He added that the overall progress of this project has been 63.27 percent so far.

The Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project has the company implementing the 20.5-kilometre BRT corridor. It includes six flyovers, 25 stations, and a 4.5-km elevated road. This will allow for 20,000 passengers per hour on each side.

There are plans to install air-conditioned buses on the first ever BRT line in Bangladesh. This will allow passengers to travel from Gazipur to any airport within 35 to 45 minutes.

The corridor will include two reserved BRT lanes and four mixed traffic lanes. There will also be footpaths for pedestrians and two lanes for motorized vehicles.

The Executive Committee of National Economic Council approved the project in December 2012. A deadline was set for October 2019, and the cost of the project was approximately Tk 2,000 crore.

The project deadline has been extended four times and now is June 2022. Meanwhile, the cost of the project has doubled to Tk 4,263.32 Crore.

Shafiqul Islam stated that construction began under the project in 2018. After which, detailed designs, tender calls and the appointment of contractors were completed.

He added that the Covid outbreak had caused the project to slow down recently.

According to the project office the works were divided into four parts by the Roads and Highways Department (Bangladesh Bridge Authority), Local Government Engineering Department (Local Government Engineering Department)

Senior executives from the company attended the briefing.

Obaidul Quader, road transport and bridges minister, stated on September 3, that the BRT line would be complete by December 2022.
